Why everyone Needs a Coping Box
As I treat patients, I realize everyone can benefit from the feeling of being safe and secure, and a place we can always rely on in the threat of danger. For some, it may be easier than others to accomplish, as their house is a safe haven, or the people around them are. I suggest creating a box with coping cards, tools and meaningful items that make you feel at ease, secure and away from the thoughts and emotions of pain. This could be as simple as placing some of the following items in a container or box:

Meditation books or music that you enjoy
Essential Oils that are calming such as Rose, Lavender or Jasmine (all my favorites)
Music you enjoy listening to or meditation tracks
A favorite book
Photographs that are reminders of happiness and feel-good emotions
Adult coloring books, which I love doing in my spare time
Fidget toys
Worry stones
Favorite uplifting, positive quotes
Beautiful poems
Journal
Coping cards with affirmations
A favorite stuffed animal
The box can be placed in a safe place and large enough to hold everything that has meaning and helps through the rough times. With increased isolation due to Covid, this box has more relevance. I've made myself one and encourage you to as well.
Coping and the response to stress can make or break someone. Having coping tools and being ready for stressors are an important piece of self-care and on-going management of psychological symptoms.
